High school — Understand that rational expressions form a system analogous to the rational numbers, closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by a nonzero rational expression; add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions.
A note on this mapping: HSA-APR.D.7 is a (+) standard — beyond the college- and career-ready threshold, i.e. precalculus rather than Algebra II.

What a student should be able to do
- Simplify a rational expression by factoring, and state the values of the variable that are excluded.
- Multiply and divide rational expressions, cancelling common factors.
- Add and subtract rational expressions using a least common denominator.
- Solve a rational equation by clearing denominators, and reject any solution that makes a denominator zero.
