A world whose rules are mathematics
Math Vale is a free browser RPG. You walk a hand-drawn world, take quests from the people who live there, and answer real mathematics to get anywhere — from counting in the Starter Village to calculus on the Isle that never quite arrives.
An account is a name and a password — no email address. Free, with no ads and nothing to buy.
How it works
Progress is earned in mathematics, not in coins
Explore, then get stopped
Each kingdom is locked behind the skills it needs. The gate to the Fraction Kingdom does not want gold — it wants you to actually be able to compare two fractions.
Every fight is a question
Monsters, bosses, work orders on your homestead and duels with other players all ask mathematics. There is no button that lets you skip the thinking.
The game watches what you know
Difficulty follows your mastery per skill, so a topic you have understood stops wasting your time and one you have not gets easier, not louder.
The world
11 kingdoms, opened in order
Each kingdom teaches one branch of mathematics and is written as a place first — with people, a problem and a reason you are there — so the mathematics arrives as something the world needs rather than a worksheet with a picture on it.
01Starter Village
The last village before the Fog.
02Number Kingdom
A forest that counts in both directions.
03Fraction Isles
Pieces of one whole, waiting to be put back.
04Algebra Kingdom
Name the unknown and it has to answer.
05Geometry Kingdom
The kingdom where you build instead of fight.
06Function Kingdom
Every machine here runs on a rule, and every rule has stopped.
07Trigonometry Peaks
Everything here comes back around.
08Calculus Kingdom
The isle that never quite arrives.
09Probability Marsh
Nothing here is certain, and everything is measured.
10Statistics Steppe
One number never describes a crowd.
11Linear Algebra Kingdom
Nowhere is anywhere until you can say how to get there.
For parents and teachers
A game that does not collect your child
Most free learning games are free because the child is the product. Math Vale is not built that way, and the difference is in the database rather than in a promise: there is no column for an email address, a phone number, a date of birth, a real name or an address, because none is ever asked for.
There are no adverts, no analytics, no third-party scripts and nothing to buy. Even the fonts are served from this domain, so opening the game does not call out to anybody else. Nothing in the game can be lost, taken or paid for — a bad day costs a student nothing.
Read exactly what is stored — it is checked against the schema, and changes in the same commit if the schema does.
Mapped to the curriculum you answer to
Every skill carries the codes for the frameworks below, checked against the published source documents rather than guessed at. They are tags, not gates: nothing in the game reads them to decide what a student may do.
- Common Core
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (United States). The calculus kingdom uses AP Calculus AB learning objectives, which pick up where the Common Core stops.
- Ontario
Ontario mathematics: the 2020 Grades 1–8 curriculum and the Grade 9 de-streamed course (MTH1W). Senior-course topics are left untagged rather than guessed at.
- SAT
The four content domains of the SAT Math section. Tagged only where the skill is actually tested, not merely assumed.
Teachers can open a class and watch progress per skill; parents can link a child and see the same.
Read before you sign up
Every lesson is public, with no account needed
You should be able to judge what a learning site teaches before handing it a child. So all 141 lessons are readable here — the explanation, worked examples, practice with full solutions, and the specific mistakes students make on that topic.
141 lessons
Counting to calculus, grouped by topic, each with worked examples and practice.
Browse →Guides
What order maths goes in, which mistakes keep recurring, and how to sequence fractions.
Browse →Curriculum
Every Common Core, Ontario and SAT code, each linked to the lesson that teaches it.
Browse →The Starter Village is waiting
Pick a name, pick a face, and walk out of the village gate. It takes about a minute, and you can stop whenever you like.
