How to choose a free maths practice site for your child

"Free" usually means the child is the product, and "adaptive" usually means a difficulty slider. These are the questions worth asking before signing a child up for anything, and how to check the answers yourself rather than taking a marketing page at its word.

There are a lot of free maths sites, and the differences that matter are not the ones on the front page. Whether the graphics are good is easy to check in a minute. Whether the site collects your child's email address, sells the data, or stops working after ten questions a day takes longer — and those are the ones you will care about in a month.

Below are the questions worth asking, each with a way to check the answer yourself. Math Vale's own answers are given plainly, and you should verify them the same way you would verify anybody else's.

Seven questions to ask before signing up

Each of these can be checked from outside the product, before you create an account.

  • What does it ask for at sign-up?

    Open the registration page and read the fields. Anything asking for a child's email address, date of birth, school or real name is collecting more than it needs to teach maths.

    Math Vale asks for a username, a display name and a password. There is no field for anything else, and no column in the database to hold it.

  • Does it run trackers?

    Open the page with your browser's developer tools on the Network tab and watch what it calls out to. A learning site that loads a dozen third-party domains is doing something other than teaching.

    Math Vale loads no analytics, no advertising and no third-party scripts. Even the fonts are served from its own domain, so opening it does not call anybody else.

  • Is the free version actually usable?

    Many "free" sites cap you at a handful of questions a day, or lock the useful reports. Try it before you rely on it: do twenty questions and see what happens.

    Math Vale has no cap, no paid tier and nothing to buy. There is no payment code in it.

  • Can the child lose anything?

    Streaks, lives, timers and leaderboards create pressure to keep playing rather than to understand. Ask what happens on a bad day, or after a week away.

    Nothing in Math Vale can be lost, taken or paid for, and there is no streak to break.

  • Does the difficulty follow understanding, or a timer?

    Ask how it decides what to show next. "Adaptive" often means it gets harder as you get things right, which is not the same as tracking what a student understands per topic.

    Math Vale tracks mastery per skill and sets difficulty from that, so a topic you have understood stops repeating.

  • Can you see what it covers, without an account?

    If the curriculum is behind a signup wall, you cannot judge it. A site confident in its content shows you.

    Every Math Vale lesson is readable without an account, along with the Common Core, Ontario and SAT codes each one carries.

  • Does the privacy policy match the product?

    Read it. Then check one specific claim against what the site actually does — if the policy says "we do not use advertising cookies", look. A policy that has drifted from the software is worse than none, because it is believed.

    Math Vale's privacy page is checked against the database schema by an automated test, and changes in the same commit if the schema does.

Why this page names no competitors

You will find plenty of "best free alternatives to X" lists, and most of them are written by one product about its rivals. Prices change, free tiers change, and a comparison table is only worth reading if somebody is keeping every cell in it current — which almost nobody does.

So this page gives you the questions instead. They work on any product, they do not go stale, and you do not have to trust us to use them. Including on us: every claim above about Math Vale is enforced by a test in the open codebase, and the build fails if the code stops making it true.
